Two maverick Melbourne composers. Two groundbreaking Australian women of 20th century music. Margaret Sutherland and Peggy-Glanville Hicks – you may know their names, but do you know their stories? Their legacy?
Open your ears and broaden your mind with this fascinating concert/talk about the birth of modernism in Australia, and the determined women who shook up Australia’s parochial music scene.
13 Ways of Looking at a Blackbird features international tenor Daniel Szesiong Todd and acclaimed pianist Ioanna Salmanidis showcasing some of Sutherland and Glanville-Hicks’ finest works for voice and piano. They are joined by rising-star musicologist Aidan McGartland, who has brought his Melbourne roots to the world stage, with his work on Australian women composers featured in numerous international publications.
Join us at Nightingale Gallery for an evening of song and story, that makes visible the forgotten legacy of these brilliant, yet underrated Australian female composers.
