Steen Foege

Steen Foege explores the relationship between memory, emotion, and the natural world. He does not paint landscapes as they appear, but rather as they are remembered, dreamed, and felt. While many artists create places that resemble reality, Steen’s intention is different. The landscapes within his paintings often do not exist in a literal sense, yet they feel familiar. They invite the viewer to enter their own memories, longings, and emotions. His work is inspired by those moments when nature seems larger than ourselves, when light breaks through the clouds, when the sky opens up, or when a certain atmosphere suddenly touches something deep within us. 

“I am interested in feelings rather than descriptions, and in creating images that resonate on an emotional level.”

In a world filled with expectations, constant stimulation, and digital noise, Steen believes many people are longing for moments of calm and reflection. His paintings are not political statements or attempts to explain the world. Instead, they create small spaces of pause and quiet.

“If my paintings can offer a sense of peace, awaken a memory, or evoke a dream that the viewer had almost forgotten, then they have fulfilled their purpose.”

Steen graduated from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, School of Architecture, specialising in graphic design. This exhibition marks the first time his work has been presented in Australia.
