Florence Dussuyer

Florence Dussuyer is a French multidisciplinary artist whose practice centres on painting, materiality, the body, nature, memory, and femininity. Painting is the space of the body in which she finds her place and unfolds, particularly through monumental formats, sometimes reaching 9 metres or 6 × 1.8 metres. She works across a wide range of supports, including wooden screens, Indian camel-bone supports, Vietnamese scrolls, and other unconventional surfaces.

Deeply engaged with materiality, Dussuyer embraces the effects of climatic variations on her practice, moving between the outdoors and the studio. For her, the body is inseparable from nature, to which we all belong. Working through her own femininity, she pays homage to women, who appear primarily through suggestion within open, vividly coloured spaces where memory remains a constant presence.

Dussuyer's painting is nourished by a free-flowing narrative inspired by art history, landscape, animals, and her own inner world. Guided by personal experiences and emotions, she seeks to bring beauty and poetry into the world—qualities she considers both necessary and restorative.

Dussuyer trained in applied arts in Lyon and holds a Master's degree in Fine Arts from Saint-Étienne, France, with further study at the École des Beaux-Arts in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Alongside her artistic practice, she has taught for 15 years, working as a primary school teacher, lecturer in a Faculty of Art, and visual arts teacher at secondary and high-school levels. Her interdisciplinary training and teaching experience also encompass body and voice workshops, occupational therapy, dance, ceramics, creative writing, and disability inclusion.

Her work has received significant recognition. In 2019, Dussuyer was awarded the Alain Brugnon Painting Prize, presented by the Taylor Foundation in Paris. In 2007, she received the President's Prize at the SLBA Salon in Lyon.

Dussuyer's work has been exhibited extensively in France and internationally. Her French exhibitions include presentations at Galerie Bayart, Magnagallery Paris, the Taylor Foundation in Paris, the Matmut Art Centre – Daniel Havis, the Paul-Dini Museum, and Espace Vallès, among others. Internationally, her work has been exhibited in Belgium, Switzerland, Luxembourg, South Korea, Vietnam, Australia, and elsewhere.

Her forthcoming projects include a solo exhibition at the Musée de Saint-Romain-en-Gal, France, as well as a group exhibition at the Grand Palais in Paris.

Her work is held in public collections, including the Paul-Dini Museum in Villefranche-sur-Saône, which acquired two monumental works in 2022, measuring 6 × 2 metres and 180 × 180 cm. In 2025, her work was also acquired by the Espace Vallès Art Library in Saint-Martin-d'Hères. Her paintings have additionally appeared in film, including Les Jeunes Amants, directed by Carine Tardieu in 2022.

Dussuyer's multidisciplinary practice extends into artist residencies, performance, and dance. In May 2025, she undertook a residency at Maison Van Moe-Praden on the Île d'Aix, supported by the Taylor Foundation in Paris. In May 2023, she participated in a residency and exhibition with 11:11 D'artistes in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, for La Traversée par le Milieu. Between 2017 and 2019, she developed the dance performance Pour le meilleur with Catherine André-Traoré and Rachel Sigué-Chenet of the Compagnie du Grand Delta, in collaboration with the Théâtre Le Verso and the Musée de la Mine in Saint-Étienne.

Her performance and dance practice includes Son île, developed during her Île d'Aix residency with the Taylor Foundation; Et danser la peinture (2021), a filmed dance performance at the Matmut Contemporary Art Centre; Pour le meilleur et petites formes dansées (2019) at the Musée de la Mine in Saint-Étienne; Pour le meilleur (2018) at Théâtre Le Verso; and Pour le meilleur (2017), presented as part of the Off Biennale du Design in Saint-Étienne.

Across painting, performance, and dance, Florence Dussuyer's practice explores the relationship between body, nature, memory, femininity, and materiality. Through monumental scale, unconventional supports, vivid colour, and an intuitive approach to narrative, she creates poetic and emotionally charged spaces in which personal and collective experiences can unfold.
